The pull-back motor is the whole point

This is the distinction worth understanding before buying. A Technic supercar at three times the price is a static model with working steering and a gearbox. This one moves under its own power the moment it is finished, which for a nine-year-old is the difference between a model and a toy. It is also robust enough to take repeated launches without shedding panels.

About that app

The AR racing app is a genuine extra, but do not let it drive the purchase. Companion apps get retired, phones change, and support windows for tie-in software are short. Judge the set on the physical model, and treat the app as something that may not be there in a few years.

Who it fits

A good first Technic set. The build teaches how gears and chassis parts fit together without the multi-day commitment of the larger cars, and the result does something when it is done. For an adult builder after an evening project, it is on the light side - the appeal here is squarely with younger builders.

Verdict

One of the better value entries in the Technic line, precisely because it does not try to be a display piece. Buy it for someone who will race it, not for someone who will shelf it.
