Most Technic cars ask for a weekend. The LEGO Technic Ferrari Daytona SP3 42143 asks for a couple of weeks of evenings - and it earns them. At 3,778 pieces and 1:8 scale, this is the flagship of the Technic supercar line, and the only set here where you build a working gearbox before you build a single body panel.

What you actually get

• 3,778 pieces building a 1:8 scale replica of Ferrari’s Icona-series Daytona SP3, close to 60 cm (23 in) long when finished.
• An 8-speed sequential gearbox shifted with paddles behind the steering wheel - the mechanical heart of the build.
• A mid-mounted V12 with pistons that visibly rise and fall as the car rolls.
• Butterfly doors, working steering and suspension, plus the trademark wrap-around windscreen line of the original.
• An 18+ box that means it: this is an adult build in pacing, complexity and shelf presence.

The drivetrain comes first

The build order is the point. You spend the first evenings assembling gearbox, engine and suspension into a rolling chassis, and you test every function before any bodywork goes on. It is the closest LEGO gets to actual powertrain assembly, and it is why the set rewards slow, careful building - a mis-seated gear in hour two is a grinding noise in hour twenty.

Who it suits

Builders who want the journey as much as the trophy. If the joy is in mechanisms - watching a paddle click translate into a gear change - this is the most complete expression of it in the current range. It is also a legitimate centrepiece: at nearly 60 cm, it does not decorate a shelf, it occupies one.

Worth knowing first

The price is flagship-grade, and so is the footprint - measure your shelf before you order. Technic bodywork means panel gaps; seen from a metre away it is stunning, inspected from ten centimetres it is honest about being made of beams. And the gearbox tolerates no shortcuts: rush the early chapters and you will be taking the back half apart again.

Fascinating detective work on the two leftover panel pieces! Also was really amazed by the building techniques here.

So many printed pieces makes me happy but angry at the same time for the StarWars sets and other large scale with stickers included!
