Star Wars · Buildable Figure

R2-D2 got his big LEGO figure years ago; his partner had to wait. The LEGO Star Wars C-3PO 75398 is a 1,138-piece, 18+ buildable droid at $139.99, on shelves since August 2024 and - unlike most sets in this month’s list - still current, with no exit date listed on Brickset. One C-3PO minifigure stands beside the big one.

What you actually get

  • 1,138 pieces, rated 18+, at a US price of $139.99 - 12.3 cents per piece, which is the price of all that gold: pearl-gold elements cost more, and this set is nearly nothing else.
  • A gold-plated protocol droid with posable arms and head, the exposed wiring at the midriff, and the mismatched silver lower leg from the original trilogy that fans check for first.
  • A display stand with an information plaque, matching the other 18+ Star Wars figures, plus one C-3PO minifigure.
  • A current retail set per Brickset, so you should be paying list price, not marketplace prices.

How does it compare with R2-D2 and Chewbacca?

The three big original-trilogy figures form a natural set. R2-D2 75308 is the heaviest build, all mechanism and panels. Chewbacca 75371 is the tallest and the most textured. C-3PO is the leanest: fewer pieces, a slimmer figure, and a build that is mostly about getting the gold surfaces smooth. Of the three it’s the only one still in production, which makes it the one to start with if you’re building the trio.

On a shelf, the two droids together are the picture everyone wants; the figure is scaled to stand next to R2 at the right height.

Is LEGO C-3PO 75398 worth it?

At $139.99 it’s fair rather than generous - the per-piece price is high, and the build is shorter than R2’s. What you’re paying for is the finished figure, and that part delivers: it’s instantly recognisable, the gold reads well under normal room light, and it’s the only large C-3PO LEGO has made. If you own R2-D2 already, it’s an easy yes. If you don’t, R2 is the better single purchase and this is the better second one.

Who it suits

Adult Star Wars fans building the character shelf, and anyone shopping for a fan who already has the ships. It’s also the most gift-safe of the three figures because it’s current - no marketplace roulette. Less suited to children (nothing plays, and gold elements scratch) and to builders who want a long project.

Worth knowing first

Two practical notes. First, pearl-gold elements show fingerprints more than any other LEGO colour; handle the finished figure by the stand. Second, because it’s a current set, it goes on sale - this is one to buy at a discount rather than at list, and it appears in the usual holiday promotions.

What builders say

We have not built this one ourselves. These are real comments from builders who have, taken from a public YouTube review.

I really like that he is slightly sunk into the sand, makes Threepio seem to have actual weight

1138 pieces! Somebody made an effort on the quantity considering the significance of that number.

When the arms fell off at 07:33 it's actually because they weren't connected all the way. You can see it in the previous 30 seconds. The gray elbow pieces aren't supposed to be visible like that. Look at the official set images

Verdict

The missing half of the droid pair: 1,138 gold pieces, a minifigure, a plaque, and the advantage of still being on shelves. Buy it on a promotion and put it next to R2. For where it sits among everything we’ve rated, see the best LEGO sets for adults. Check the current price of C-3PO on Amazon.
