LEGO Friends Castle Bed and Breakfast 42638 Review: 1,311 Pieces of Heartlake Hotel
Friends ยท Heartlake City
Friends sets are usually small, bright and aimed at six-year-olds. This one is a 12+ castle. The LEGO Friends Castle Bed and Breakfast 42638 is 1,311 pieces at $99.99 with four mini-dolls and a dog, launched in June 2024 and, according to Brickset, off shelves at the end of 2025. It’s the set that quietly made the theme interesting to older builders.

What you actually get
- 1,311 pieces, rated 12+, at a US price of $99.99 - 7.6 cents per piece, which is good value for a licensed-scale building with this much interior.
- A stone castle converted into a hotel: guest rooms, a dining area, a tower, and the sort of furnishing detail Friends does better than City - beds, lamps, a kitchen you can actually set a scene in.
- 4 mini-dolls, 3 unique to this set according to Brickset, plus a dog figure. Mini-dolls, not minifigures - that matters if you’re mixing it with other themes.
- Retired at the end of 2025 per Brickset, so listings are remaining stock and marketplace prices.
How does it compare with the rest of the Friends line?
Most Friends sets are under 600 pieces and built for play speed. The Castle Bed and Breakfast is more than twice that, with a 12+ rating and a build closer to a modular building than a playset: walls, floors, a roof you lift off. It’s the set to buy when a child has outgrown the small pastel boxes but isn’t ready for an 18+ display model - and it’s the one adults in the Friends community treat as the theme’s flagship of that year.
Against a comparably priced castle from another theme it holds up on interior and loses on minifigure compatibility. If the recipient collects minifigures, note the mini-doll format before you buy.
Is LEGO Castle Bed and Breakfast 42638 worth it?
Yes at list price, and it’s still one of the better buildings-per-dollar in any current theme. It’s a real build, not a ten-minute box, and the finished hotel is presentable on a shelf. The caveat is retirement: with Brickset’s exit date behind us, buy from remaining stock near $99.99 rather than waiting - Friends sets don’t inflate like licensed ones, but they do disappear.
Who it suits
Builders from about ten upward who like interiors and storytelling, and adults who enjoy the modular-building style without the modular price. It’s a strong shared build for a parent and child. Less suited to anyone who wants vehicles or action features, and to collectors who need minifigure scale.
Worth knowing first
Two practical notes. First, the castle opens for play and the walls are thin by design - it’s a hotel to look into, not a fortress to drop. Second, this is one of the few Friends sets where the box says 12+ and means it: the interior steps are fiddly, and a six-year-old will need help.
What builders say
We have not built this one ourselves. These are real comments from builders who have, taken from a public YouTube review.

I agree with you completely that the Friends sets are better for Lego city building than the regular Lego sets.
Bro, the community center is what made me want legos. I have it moced up and itโs a beauty. Now this castle set has me ๐
I am very happy to see this set reviewed! I am planning on picking it up and the reveal is what got me started on a medieval scene (separate from my Lego city) . Great video!
Verdict
The Friends set for people who think they’ve outgrown Friends: 1,311 pieces, a proper building, four mini-dolls and a dog, at a fair price while stock lasts.
