Architecture · Landmark Series

White bricks, symmetry, and not a single sticker of a superhero anywhere. The LEGO Architecture Taj Mahal 21056 is a 2,022-piece, 18+ model of the mausoleum at Agra, launched at $119.99 in June 2021 and, according to Brickset, retired at the end of 2024. It’s the calm, grown-up build in a catalogue full of spaceships.

What you actually get

  • 2,022 pieces, rated 18+, at an original US price of $119.99 - 5.9 cents per piece, one of the lowest ratios in the whole Architecture range.
  • The main mausoleum with its central dome and four minarets, the raised platform and the reflecting pool in front, all in white with a sand-coloured base and a printed nameplate.
  • A build that is almost entirely white, which is the point and the challenge: the detail comes from shapes and layering, not colour.
  • Retired since the end of 2024 per Brickset, so listings are remaining stock and marketplace prices rather than list.

How does it compare with the other Landmark sets?

Most Architecture landmarks are tall and thin - towers, statues, a single building on a small footprint. The Taj Mahal is wide and symmetrical, and that symmetry makes the build meditative in a way the skyline sets never are: you build one quarter, then you build it three more times. For some people that’s the appeal; for others it’s the deal-breaker, so be honest about which you are.

For the tall-and-thin alternative in the same line, see our Statue of Liberty 21042 piece. The two are the extremes of what Architecture does.

Is LEGO Taj Mahal 21056 worth it?

For a display builder, yes - at list price it was the best pieces-per-dollar in Architecture, and the finished model looks far more expensive than it was. Since retirement the question is the listing in front of you. Because it’s white and mostly common parts, it hasn’t climbed the way licensed sets do; if you find one within striking distance of $119.99, it’s the easiest yes in this month’s reviews.

Who it suits

Adults who want a LEGO set that doesn’t look like one on a bookshelf, travellers, and anyone who finds repetition relaxing rather than boring. It’s a well-judged gift for someone who has never built LEGO as an adult. Less suited to kids, to anyone who wants play features, and to builders who need a new technique every ten pages.

Worth knowing first

Two practical notes. First, white bricks show fingerprints and yellow slowly in direct sun - put it away from a window, and build it with clean hands. Second, the reflecting pool section is wide; measure the shelf before you buy, because a model that only fits on the floor tends to end up back in the box.

What builders say

We have not built this one ourselves. These are real comments from builders who have, taken from a public YouTube review.

Yes, the lighting indeed was weird… Beyond that… what do you think about the Taj Mahal LEGO set?

Cool video, and I see your point concerning the sets. And it gives me the chance to use the pun "Taj Mahal? Muda-te!" in a youtube comment.

Just picked up this one. It’s a beautiful set to display. Also have the old big version. Compared to that one it looses, but the hidden features are very nice. Next week will receive the “Wonders of the world” set which has a mini version of the Taj Mahal.

Verdict

The quietest set in this month’s list and one of the best value: 2,022 white pieces, a landmark everyone recognises, and a price that never inflated much after retirement.
